219th Wednesday Lecture: Introduction to the Travel through the Paradise and Hells- The Afterlife as Expressed in the Pictures of Six Realms of Creation 六道絵― Part 2
This is the second part of the lecture. The story of the "Travel after Death" is discussed with examples of two paintings in the Idemitsu Collection, "Ten Kings of Hell and Scenes of Punishments 十王地獄図" and "Six Realms of Creation and Ten Kings of Hell 六道十王図", as well as other examples of the same theme. Part Two explains each of Six Realms, of Hells 地獄道., Hungry Ghosts 餓鬼道, Beasts 畜生道, Asura 阿修羅道, Humans 人道, and Heavenly Beings 天道. Then, the author concludes with the Japanese understanding or alteration of this "Travel after Death" as something linear in overall layout, which is not exactly the sutras describe and is the original rearrangement of this concept by the Japanese.
