The significance of the ovipositor in the courtship behavior of males and the physiological characteristics of its internal fluids were investigated under various conditions. In typical mating behavior, a nuptial-colored male repeatedly exhibited courtship behavior (quivering) to a female with a long ovipositor. The male seldom showed this courtship behavior to a female with a short ovipositor. The presence of the long ovipositor was verified to be an important factor when a male selects as a mate for courtship. Fluid was observed leaking from the tip of the long ovipositor. Fluids (ovarian fluid) squeezed out of an ovipositor along with eggs and this leaking fluid (mainly urine) were effective in provoking the skimming behavior associated with sperm ejection by males. In conclusion, a long ovipositor is one of the important factors by which a male chooses a female for his quivering courtship behavior.
