Six hundred and twenty one students from high and low status universities in Japan participated in the study. They were asked to complete a university identification scale and a questionnaire concerning beliefs about Japanese academic pedigree society. Factor analyses revealed that the university identification consisted of four subcomponents; attachment, commitment, reputation and belongingness. Also, it was shown that attitudes toward academic pedigree society were best described by three-factor model representing beliefs in legitimacy, illegitimacy and persistence of academic pedigree society. It was found that beliefs in legitimacy of academic pedigree society were positively correlated with all the four aspects of group identification among high-status university students, but such correlations were hardly found among low-status university students.
