| 内容記述 | Present German has two sorts of personal pronouns of address; the familiar form Du and the polite form Sie. However, the history of German pronouns of address is very complicated and, according to Simon (2003), their system has developed through six stages. In the stage Ⅳ (the 18th century) four pronouns were used and their politeness degree was from below Du - Ihr - Er/Sie - Sie. In the stage Ⅴ (the beginning of the 19th century) this system changed into the ranking Du - Er/Sie - Ihr - Sie. Therefore, the ranking change occurred during the second half of the 18th century. This article investigates the use of the German pronouns of address in literary works of the Goethean era and considers which system the writers used. As a result of the investigation we see that the system of the stage Ⅳ is used in the following works; Lessing’s Emilia Galotti (1772), Wagner’s Die Kindermörderin (1776), and Schiller’s Kabale und Liebe (1784). The system of the stage Ⅴ is used in the following works; Lenz’s Der Hofmeister (1774), Goethe’s Die Leiden des jungen Werthers (first version: 1774), Der Gross-Cophta (1791), Der Bürgergeneral (1793), Die Aufgeregten (1793), Wieland’s Geschichte der Abderiten (revised version: 1796), Tieck’s Der gestiefelte Kater (1797), Schiller’s Wallenstein (1798-99), and Kleist’s Das Erdbeben in Chili (1807). From this result we conclude that the system of the stage Ⅴ was already established in the 1770s to some extent. In the historical literature the system of the pronouns of address which does not correspond to the real history of the pronouns is often used. In Kleist’s Der zerbrochne Krug (1808), for example, the system of three pronouns ranking from below Du - Er/Sie - Ihr is used. Such a fictional system seems to have been built on the basis of the system of the stage Ⅴ established at the time. | |||||
