The reaction can be used to teach undergraduate students majoring in chemistry the 1,4-addition of aromatic carbon-nucleophiles to maleimides. The experiment needs simple and inexpensive glassware, can also be performed easily with short reaction time. Students have opportunity to interpret 1H NMR data to identify the product.
