Understanding age-related differences in children's risk perception and recognition of appropriate evacuation behavior is vital, particularly among upper elementary school students. This study aimed to clarify these age-related differences through a questionnaire survey and to explore children's concrete understanding of evacuation behavior in hypothetical scenarios without adult supervision using free descriptions. A survey was conducted with 4th (N=89), 5th (N=86), and 6th (N=85) grade elementary school students. Quantitative data from 5-point Likert scale items were analyzed using ANOVA. Free descriptions on hypothetical evacuation scenarios without adults were analyzed using content analysis with five predefined categories. Quantitative results indicated significant age-related differences in several areas: 6th graders showed lower disaster prevention awareness and self-efficacy compared to other grades, while 5th graders had higher interest in utilizing hazard maps. Free description analysis revealed that few students described integrated primary and secondary evacuation behaviors (Category 5). The distribution of response categories, including a high rate of non-responses particularly among 4th and 6th graders, varied significantly by grade and scenario. This suggested challenges in students' understanding of the staged transition and integration of evacuation actions based on situational judgment when adults are not present. The findings underscore the importance of developing practical disaster prevention education programs tailored to children's developmental stages, focusing on cultivating independent judgment and the ability to execute integrated evacuation actions.
