In particular, this paper focuses on the contents of explicit instruction, i.e., how the instructor gave it to JLEs. Ergative verbs (e.g., burn, close and open) can be used transitively (e.g., John closed the door) and intransitively (e.g., The door closed). Otaki and Shirahata (2017) report that many JLEs tend to regard intransitive usage of an ergative verb as ungrammatical when the subject is inanimate. The learners are likely to revise the active sentence into a passive sentence. Since ergative verb usages seem to satisfy all the conditions Shirahata (2015) proposed for the effectiveness of explicit instruction, the authors attempted to examine the validity of the explicit instruction. The first author explicitly taught university JLEs that ergative verbs were able to be used both transitively and intransitively and that both animate and inanimate nouns were able to be placed at a subject position. Three explicit instruction sessions were held for 45 university JLEs for three consecutive weeks. JLEs’ grammatical comprehension was tested through grammaticality judgment tasks three times; before, a week after, and 13 weeks after the instruction sessions. Our results indicate that the explicit instruction was effective, and the effect was maintained for 13 weeks after the last instruction session.
