Hundreds of studies have been undertaken to measure the success of cooperative learning as an instructional method regarding social skills, student learning, and achievement across all levels from primary grades through college. This study investigated the students’ (participants’) attitudes towards and performance in group work in the class that the researcher implemented at a university in Japan. The class seeks to achieve multicultural knowledge through small group work. The heterogeneous students in groups of four worked together to achieve their group goals: a presentation and the writing of a report. After the classes finished, the students were asked to evaluate their performance as a group. The evaluation questions were devised to assess how they participated in the group-based cooperative learning, with particular attention to the following five elements (five variables) that Johnson et al. (2002) posited. Those five elements are: 1) positive interdependence (Students must fully participate and put forth effort within their group. Each group member has a task/role/responsibility and therefore must believe that they are responsible for their learning and that of their group); 2) face-to-face promotive interaction (Members promote each other’s success. Students explain to one another what they have learned or are learning and assist one another with the understanding and completion of assignments); 3) individual and group accountability (Each student must demonstrate mastery of the content being studied. Each student is accountable for their learning and work, therefore eliminating “social loafing”); 4) social skills (Social skills that must be taught in order for successful cooperative learning to occur. Skills include effective communication, interpersonal and group skills, c.f. leadership. decisionmaking, trust-building, friendship- development, communication, and conflict-management skills); and 5) group processing (Group processing occurs when group members (a) reflect on which member actions were helpful and (b) make decision about which actions to continue or change. The purpose of group processing is to clarify and improve the effectiveness with which members carry out the processes necessary to achieve the group’s goals.) The participants were 52 Japanese university students with different majors enrolled in the experiment class. The results revealed that the students fully participated and put forth effort within their group. They were accountable to themselves and to the group. However, they did not use social skills appropriately and did not always reflect on themselves after the group work.
