The amounts of air bubbles produced at entry and during the glide period of the start phase were analyzed by the binalization method and their kinetic parameters were measured. All of the subjects performed a streamline posture for up to about 10 m after entry into the water. It was found that transit time(at the 5- and 7-m points)became significantly shorter and the deceleration rate significant reduced as the amount of air bubbles increased. Moreover, transit time was found to be related to the physique index. However, after adjustment for the influence of physique, air bubble production was no longer related to transit time, and in fact showed a significant negative correlation with the deceleration rate.
