This habit is guaranteed by a pair of ever-growing incisors (I1 and I1) with simple morphology on each side of upper and lower jaws. Fossils of the rodent incisors occurring in a detached state are very abundant in Quaternary cave and fissure sediments yielding mammal fossils in Japan. However, most of the incisor fossils have not been studied taxonomically, because any universal research method has not been proposed for fossil rodent incisors from Japan, and because morphological characters on incisors of extant rodents inhabiting Japan have been almost unknown. Thus, we propose here a research method universally applicable to Quaternary rodent incisor fossils from Japan on the basis of measurements and observation of incisors of extant rodent species from the same country (six arvicolid and six murid species). The method comprises measurements of height (H) and width (W) of each incisor, calculation for area index of section (H×W) and shape index of section (W / H), calculation for radius of curvature, measurements of length and width of occlusal surface (Lo and Wo, respectively), calculation for area index of occlusal surface (Lo×Wo) and for shape index of occlusal surface (Wo / Lo), and morphological observation of section and occlusal surface.
