Meriam; 1872-1960)がミズーリ大学附属初等学校(以下,ミズーリ学校と称す)における実験の中で設置した4領域の一つである「観察」の理論と実践を解明するものである。「観察」は,メリアムによる急進的なカリキュラム開発における主要領域だった。本研究においては「観察」の実態解明のために,「観察」が設置されるに至る史的文脈,その文脈の中で抱いたメリアムによる学校教育への問題意識,「観察」の方法とそれを支える理論基盤に加え,ミズーリ学校の教師による実践事例を提示し,分析を加えた。その結果,メリアムがミズーリ学校で身に付けられるとする「子どもたちが有為な存在となるための五つの要素」が涵養される事例を明らかにすることができた。, J. L. Meriam (1872–1960) was appointed to the University of Missouri in 1904. For about 20 years, from 1905 to 1924, he was also the director of the Elementary School at the University of Missouri, where he directed the school’s experiments. With the goal of elementary education being to “help boys and girls do better in all those wholesome activities in which they normally engage,” Meriam began to experiment with developing a curriculum organized in the four study areas of “observation,” “play,” “stories,” and “hand work,” abolishing the traditional curriculum consisting of “the three Rs” (reading, writing, and arithmetic) and conventional subjects. Meriam published Child Life and the Curriculum in 1920, in which he presented and publicized his own curriculum development. This study elucidates the theory and practice of “observation,” one of the four study areas established by Meriam in developing the curriculum for the Elementary School at the University of Missouri. “Observation” was a key area of study in the radical curriculum developed by Meriam, which excluded the traditional curriculum. In this study, to clarify the actual situation of “observation,” in addition to analyzing the historical context in which “observation” was established, Meriam’s awareness of the problems of school education in that context, and the method of “observation” and the theoretical foundation that supported it, a case study of teachers at the Elementary School at the University of Missouri is presented.
