| 内容記述 | Compared to Compound Nouns like "bedroom" and "bluebird", Compound Nouns such as "highwayman", "pickpocket" and "scapegoat" are not easy for English learners to acquire, because of the difficulty in predicting the value of their composite whole from the values of their component parts. In this respect, Compound Nouns seem to exemplify encyclopedic semantics proposed by Langacker (1987:154-158), which argues that linguistic expressions are not meaningful in and of themselves, but only through the access they afford to various stores of knowledge that allow language users to make sense of them. Cognitive Grammar refers to our cognitive ability to invoke a conceived entity for the purpose of establishing mental contact with another as "Reference-Point Ability." Making reference to this ability it attempts to explain the mechanism of metonymy, one of the figures of speech. This paper analyzes the metonymic phenomena in English Compound Nouns through diagramming them and considers its suggestions to the teaching of English Compound Nouns. | |||||
