| 内容記述 | This paper is an attempt to investigate the structure and function of "marked" expressions in English and Japanese, from a functional point of view, and to give a systematic account of unmarked vs marked constructions. Cleft and pseudo-cleft sentences, topicalized sentences, sentences with contrastive wa and those with exhaustive listing ga are examples of 'marked' constructions. These types of sentences require special treatment when we consider their functions in discourse situations. It will be shown, in the course of discussion, that there are four principles inherent in unmarked constructions, and that most of the marked expressions are the results of intentional violations of those principles in order to give cognitively prominent status to certain elements in the sentences. It will also be pointed out that the use of contrastive stress and higher pitch in spoken language is a positive means of creating marked expressions. The four principles inherent in unmarked constructions are (i) the principle of basic word order, (ii) the principle of "from light to heavy", (iii) the principle of pronominalization, pro-verbalization or deletion of given elements, and (iv) the principle of "from given to new." | |||||
