内容記述 | It has been suggested that students’ understanding of earth sciences at elementary and junior high school levels is poorer than that of other science domains. We hypothesized that one of the reasons is that rock materials are not eff ectively used in schools. In this study, we investigated the current situation of rock materials(outdoor rock gardens and hand specimens) in schools in a city in Aichi Prefecture. We conducted a questionnaire survey for all 21 public elementary and junior high schools in the city, and 19 responded to the survey. Outdoor rock gardens are present in only three elementary schools and are not well maintained. None of the teachers use a rock garden in their classes. In contrast, hand specimens are present in all the 19 schools, and most of them are properly classifi ed. More than 70% of the schools responded that almost all science teachers use hand specimens in their classes. Based on these results, we believe that it is necessary to solve both hardware and software issues to promote the use of rock materials in schools. School teachers should have a better understanding of the characteristics of both outdoor rock gardens and hand specimens. For this purpose, cooperation of geoscience professionals is indispensable. It is necessary to devise ways for teachers to determine the names of rocks regardless of personnel changes, and for students to be able to classify rocks by themselves. It is also necessary to develop specifi c applications of rock materials, to accumulate practical examples, and to publicize them. | |||||
